Who the heck is Birdchick?

Living the dream: taking a bubble bath with Swarovski spotting scopes--they really are that waterproof!

Hi!  If you’re new to my blog, welcome and thank you for visiting. I use this space as an experiment for my writing, photography (with digiscoping), videos and our podcast.

Official Bio:

Since 1997, I have successfully made it my goal to get paid to go birding. I travel the world as a field trip leader, birding consultant, humorous keynote speaker, bird field technician, bird bander and writer. I wrote the books Disapproving Rabbits, City Birds/Country Birds and 1001 Secrets Every Birder Should Know, I'm #32 in the Geek A Week Trading Card set and work as a National Park Ranger for the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area. I appear regularly on tv and radio including Outdoor News Radio, All Things Considered and have been on NBC Nightly News answering bird questions. When I'm not digiscoping or performing improv, I'm a blue ribbon beekeeper.

My number is lower than Stan Lee's!

How this got started:

I was getting a tattoo in 2004 and the guys at the parlor recognized me from my KARE 11 appearances as the "Bird Lady" and said that I needed a website. I had been looking for a new name since there are already several “bird ladies” out there.  I was never comfortable with the term “bird lady” because it implied a specific type of woman–which I’m not, I’m no lady. Also, people rarely pronounce or spell Stiteler correctly–FYI it rhymes with “tight-ler” not “Hitler”). So, Birdchick was born.

We had a side page called Disapproving Rabbits (which is now retired) where we posted photos of our rabbits and what they didn't like. Soon, people started sending us photos of their rabbits and we added those. Then we won the Internet lottery when Harper Collins emailed and asked if I wanted to turn it into a book...and thus began my career as an author.

So, that's it in a nutshell. If you are interested in booking me as a speaker please email me at sharon@birdchick.com.
